This delightful holiday home was originally built to the highest standards in 1895 being a classic combination of a historic building forming part of Recess Station on the Galway to Clifden railway, being built by the Midland Great Western Railway Company as the Engine House at Recess on the Galway to Clifden Railway.  The property has been fully renovated, refurbished and now presented in immaculate style. Large modern sunroom, sitting room / lounge, spacious and cleverly conceived kitchen / dining room. Master bedroom suite with dressing room and bathroom, 4 further bedrooms, shower room, family bath room .

The Station Cottage is set in a very scenic area with wide moorland views to the mountains of South Connemara and stunning lake views.   Less than 1 mile from Recess Village with it’s shops and pub.  Only 4-6 miles from the renowned Cashel House Hotel, Zetland Hotel and Ballynahinch Castle.

Clifden is regarded as the Capital of Connemara, with banks and a large selection of shops, pubs, and an increasing number of cultural and leisure facilities. Clifden is noted for its many fine seafood restaurants, the famous Connemara Pony Show which takes place there each August in the showground close to the property, and the Clifden Arts Festival in September, all of which attract many Irish and foreign visitors. The area is well provided for a wide range of sporting and leisure facilities, with fishing, boating and water sports most popular using the many beaches and bays which comprise this convoluted coastline.

Station House, Recess is only 40 miles from Galway City,  Shannon Airport is some 2 1/2 hours from the property, while Knock Airport is about 1 1/2 hours.
Clifden is approximately 15 minutes drive, with Letterfrack, Kylemore and Roundstone all under 30 minutes from the property.

Golf is available at the Connemara Golf Club whilst there are six other courses within an hour’s drive of the property.


The entrance leads you into a bright and airy sun room with polished oak floor, varnished pine panelled ceiling, suspended modern candelabra. Door leading into:

A large grand sitting room with a large original granite fireplace with a polished teal mantle, copper hood and red tile hearth as the focus. Doors to kitchen / dining room and to the inner hallway, cleverly divided into two areas, being the dining room and a kitchen. The dining table seats upto 8 people, the kitchen area is L shaped, fully fitted throughout with solid oak kitchen units. The kitchen is fitted with a Belling double oven, fridge freezer, a dishwasher and a 4 ring electric glass hob.

The Master bedroom is carpeted throughout, with dressing Area: fully fitted with full height wardrobes, storage cupboards, full height mirror, door leading to:

Bathroom: Fully tiled floor and ceiling, attractive Harlequin black and white marble floor and walls with ornamental wainscoting and good quality matching toilet and wash basin. Shelf above the sink with fitted wall mirror above. electric power shower with a good quality corner shower cabinet.

Bedroom 2: Double bed, fully carpeted throughout with one of the original curved walls from the buildings previous railway use.

Recess is a townland comprising of a number of small rural communities. Sheep and Cattle farming is one of the main livelihoods in the area,

Recess is an ideal location as it has easy access to the capital of Connemara, Clifden and Galway City via the N59. Recess Village is 13 miles from Clifden and 37 miles to Galway City. Bus Eireann and City Link Buses leave daily from Recess Village throughout the day

Recess Village is a small charming village containing a craft shop, grocer/petrol station and a pub. Here you will also find the Connemara Marble quarry; items produced here, can be purchased in Joyce’s Craft shop. Across the road you will find the “Connemara Giant” statue in the car park. A favoured photo op for all visitors

Joyce’s Craft Shop and Art Gallery is a must visit if you are passing the village where you will find a wide range of knit wear, rare books, antiques, handmade jewellery and original gifts. Afterwards, why not pop into Paddy Feisti’s and enjoy a hearty hot lunch!

There is a lovely pitch and putt course a 5 minute drive from Recess village (going towards Clifden), which is suitable for all ages and abilities.

Have a car why not take a trip through the Inagh Valley where you will be captivated by all the beautiful lake and mountain scenery. Lough Inagh Lodge is a perfect place to stop for lunch or dinner and take in all the stunning scenery. Once you pass through the valley, you can take a left towards Kylemore Abbey and the Connemara National Park or a right which will bring you towards the village of Leenane and then on to Westport town, a truly lovely place to take a day trip!

Or why not take a trip to the Ballinahinch Estate and have a ramble around its lovely grounds and a bite to eat in the lodge. From here you can drive towards Roundstone, Ballyconneely and then to Clifden town making the journey a loop along the N59 back to Recess.

Don’t forget to stop at Lough Inagh and take a snap of one of the most photographed areas in Connemara!


Oughterard Village is a small but bustling town made up of shops, restaurants, pubs and a public library. At the weekends the night life is busy and there are some fine eateries where you can enjoy a nice meal. Galway is approx a 20 minute drive from Oughterard and can be reached via daily bus routes operated by Bus Eireann and City Link. Clifden is approx a 40 minute drive away and can also be accessed via the bus line.

Popular Tourist Attractions in Oughterard

Oughterard Golf Course – Measuring 5,964 meters par-70 with a standard scratch of 70 off the back tees. Oughterard is now a course of Championship standard, but tailored to the skills of all golfers.

Glengowla Mines, Oughterard – Buried beneath the Connemara Mountain lies a way of life long abandoned and almost forgotten just waiting for you to explore!

Aughnanure Castle – Located 2 miles outside Oughterard town, Tours are given around this impressive 16th-century castle which is flanked by two branches of the Drimmeen River.

Derroura Mountain Bike Trail- Take a cycle along the 16Km trail which offers you some incredible mountain biking in some of the most spectacular scenery in Connemara

Corrib Princess Cruises: There are several choices of cruises departing Oughterard on a daily basis

Connemara Candles is a workshop and shop located just outside Oughterard town. You will often see the candles being made when you visit.

Fishing on the Corrib: Lough Corrib is the second largest lake in Ireland and is reputed to have 365 Islands. It is a vast lake of 44,000 acres and stretches some thirty-five miles in length from Maam in Connemara to Galway city where the river drains via the Corrib River through Galway City into Galway Bay. Lough Corrib is one of the best game fisheries in the world and it is a wonderful place to experience game angling. It is home to a variety of fresh water fish including brown trout, pike, perch, and roach, and it also attracts salmon and eels from the Atlantic Ocean. The deepest part of Lough Corrib is 152 ft/47 meters, but its average depth is approximately 40ft/12meters. Fishing methods on the lake and its rivers include spinning, trolling, dapping and dry fly fishing and the season runs from March to September. The Lake Corrib is a wild brown trout fishery. Anglers flock from all over the world to fish on this great lake and especially during the famous mayfly fishing in early summer.


Roscahill is the ideal location if you want to be within driving distance (aprox. 20kms) of Galway City as well as the villages of Moycullen (approx. 7kms) and Oughterard (approx. 6km), but far enough out to enjoy the peace and quite of Connemara. This is a great spot for families or those attending any events taking place in Galway City throughout the year such as the Galway Races, The Galway Arts Festival and the Galway Oyster Festival

Things to do in and around Roscahill:

Brigit’s Garden, Pollagh, Roscahill – Award winning Celtic Gardens with nature trails, an ancient ring fort, thatched round-house and crannog with plenty to keep the children occupied with a playground, pond and nature tail quiz. Pack a picnic for an enjoyable family day out

Moycullen Riding centre – offers one and two hour treks for individuals, couples, families and larger groups. The treks go back a bog road and across mountains with beautiful Connemara scenery and over looks Lough Corrib.

Loughwell Farm, Loughwell, Moycullen- Great family day out, especially with young children. Plenty to see and do including a pet farm, super indoor play area, mini golf course, Go Karts, obstacle course, sand pit, barrel train, pony and trap rides and more….

Recess is happy to welcome your pet, however we would ask that your pet would not be permitted on furniture or on beds. If additional cleaning is required we may have to deduct this from your damage deposit.

Electricity and Oil is charged seperately at €50 per week.

Linen & towels are inclusive in the rental rate.

Please note that a €300 security deposit is required upon arrival as long as there are no breakages or damages to the property this will be refunded on departure less the cost of utilities.

Check-in time is strictly from 5pm onwards (If you require a later check-in time please let us know)

Check-out time is strictly at 10am on day of departure.
