Local Info

Clifden Town
When you crave a bit of adrenaline or relief from absolute relaxation, bustling and vibrant Clifden Town is a quick 10-minute drive from your beach house. Music pubs, restaurants, charming boutique shops and art galleries line the streets of this friendly market town. Clifden attracts artists and musicians, craftsmen and merchants, as well as locals and international visitors to socialise, share a pint, and enjoy the electricity of life without the noise and stress of the city.

Trout & Salmon Fishing or Deep Sea Angling
With the sea beckoning from all around you and the currachs slipping by the windows, carrying our local fishermen and their nets, no one would blame anyone for getting the itch to fish these azure-blue waters. Connemara is a paradise for the trout and salmon enthusiast as well as the avid or beginning deep-sea angler. Lakes and rivers that empty into the Atlantic bays shelter massive browns, even larger (and easier to catch) coarse fish like pike, and are accessible from several of the small rural lanes that criss-cross Connemara. Several charter boats will gladly take you out for the day or a few hours of fishing around or beyond the green coastal islands.

Cycling
Quiet country roads, tracks and paths offer a wonderfully fresh way to take in the seascapes, island views, and mountain vistas at a serene and sensible pace. With 2 wheels and a picnic lunch, the peninsulas, beaches—and even all of Omey Island at low tide—are yours to survey and explore at your leisure.

Cleggan
Cleggan Village has four bars (Olivers, Joyces, Newmans, and The Pier Bar), one grocer, a post office, and a sit-down restaurant, as well as a take-out. There is traditional music regularly in the summer, and an excellent restaurant in Oliver’s Bar. There is also a childrens playground next to the community centre. There is an annual festival in Cleggan – Festival of the Sea

Walk, Hike, or Climb a Mountain
Whatever your pleasure or ability, there’s an uncrowded path waiting for you—along a beach, out and around Omey Island, alongside or over the hills and mountains of Connemara. The Twelve Ben Mountains, Mweelrea and the Maumturk Mountains all lie within a short drive of your beach house. Local beaches include White Strand and Glassilaun at Renvyle, Mannin Bay, Gurteen, and Dogs Bay.

Connemara National Park
Just down the road at Letterfrack lies the headquarters and entrance to the nearly 3000 hectares of woodlands, bogs, and mountains that make up the Connemara National Park. Entrance is free. There’s a tea and coffee shop, a playground for children, fantastic audio-visual presentations in the park’s Visitor Centre, as well as a boardwalk and carved-stone path to the top of the Diamond, one of the 12 Ben Mountains.

Kylemore Abbey & Victorian Walled Gardens
Like a near-translucent alabaster and charcoal sculpture at first glimpse, this romantic and enchanting castle perches snugly along the utterly still and deep blue Lake Pollacappul and in the folds of its tree-covered mountainside. The history and timeless beauty of this Benedictine Abbey, first built as a wedding gift in the 19th century, helps explain whit Kylemore Abbey and the Victorian Walled Gardens are one of the most visited and photographed locations in Ireland.

“What a wonderful stay we had at Once Upon A Tide.  My wife and our children with their spouses and children had plenty of room.  The house was very comfortable with location to Clifden Village and the views overlooking the Atlantic Ocean were perfect”. – Tim June 2022

We spent three wonderful days in a very nice family home, very spacious-almost too well heated with all the equipment.
Corresponding a magnificent view of the ocean and prime time good weather, I highly recommend”-Robert May 2019

“The best of the wild Atlantic way.  I rented this house to share with a couple of ladies . We had a mini yoga retreat. This house will leave you speechless. Beyond gorgeous. Million dollar views. Bed linen spotless and crisp. I have rented many houses. This one gets the 100 percent pass. Not a speck of dust under the beds. We loved it . Samantha and Yvonne the agents are a pleasure to deal with. Great advice and information. We most certainly will be back to once upon a tide. Yvonne thank you for recommending a home away from home. It was a great weekend.” Caroline May 2019
